From May 1-5, 2023, Perry Center Professor Celina Realuyo participated in the NESA-AFRICOM Workshop Series on “The Changing Nature of Security,” “Transnational Threats Know No Boundaries” and “The Women’s Revolution: Life, Liberty, and Freedom” conducted in Bangkok, Thailand. The engagement included 60 participants (50 women and 10 men) who are DOD regional center alumni from 22 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. They shared their respective perspectives on defense and security threats and the role of women in countering these threats. Professor Realuyo spoke on “The Digitalization of Illicit Networks” underscoring the opportunities in and threats from cyberspace and emerging technologies. Since 2011, the William J. Perry Center and Near East South Asia Center from Strategic Studies have been collaborating on these annual cross-regional alumni workshops examining emerging threats in the global commons.
