On Tuesday, July 23, The William J. Perry Center and Argentina Global co-sponsored a webinar focused on Argentina’s pursuit of becoming a NATO Global Partner. This initiative is part of Argentina’s broader efforts to professionalize and modernize its armed forces. Argentina follows Colombia as the second Latin American country seeking this relationship.

The webinar was introduced with opening remarks from Perry Center Director Paul Angelo and Director of Maritime Programs for Argentina Global, Maximo Perez Leon Barreto. The main event featured a high-level panel including Gwendoline Vamos, NATO Director for Global Partners in the Political Affairs and Security Policy Division, and retired General Alberto Jose Mejia Ferrero, former Commander of the Colombian Military Forces.

Ms. Vamos provided insights into the Global Partnership program, detailing the progression process and requirements for achieving Global Partner status. General Mejía shared Colombia’s experience, discussing the reasons behind its decision, the certification process, and the benefits it has gained from the partnership.

The webinar attracted significant interest, with 743 individuals registering and 340 attending the event. Notably, 208 attendees were Perry Center alumni, representing 61% of the total participants.
