The Perry Center Participates in a Triborder Regional Security Meeting with Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and the United States

From August 13 to 15, 2024, Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina hosted the “Regional Meeting on the New Challenges for Public Security in Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and the United States – United for a Safer Hemisphere.” The event was organized by the Perry Center, Supreme Court of Paraguay and the Institute for Economic and Social Development of the Borders (IDESF) in Brazil, among other partner institutions with the first day in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, the second day in Ciudad del Este, Paraguay and the third day in Puerto Iguazú, Argentina. Over 400 representatives from 30 agencies participated in this historic three-day regional security meeting.

The forum began at the Brazilian Federal Police Auditorium and was presided by the Regional Superintendent of the Federal Police in Paraná, Rivaldo Venâncio, the Head of the PF International Cooperation Office, Ricardo Cubas, the Chief Deputy of the Federal Police in Foz do Iguaçu, Marco Berzoini Smith, the President of the Alto Paraná Judicial Circuit (Paraguay), Juliana Giménez Portillo, the Commander of the Paraguayan National Police, Carlos Humberto Benitez, the Head of the Paraguayan Organized Crime Department, Luis Lopez, the Director of the William J. Perry Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies, Paul Angelo, and the President of the Institute for the Economic and Social Development of Borders (IDESF), Luciano Stremel Barros.

The three-day conference included presentations on the trafficking of drugs, persons and contraband, terrorism, border insecurity, threat finance, penitentiary reform and public security in the triborder area. All the speakers underscored the importance of international and interagency cooperation among Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and the US to combat transnational organized crime and terrorism and promote security and prosperity in the Western Hemisphere.
