From 12-14 August 2024 Perry Center Visiting Professor Brigadier General (ret.) Juan Carlos Gomez of Colombia supported the US Southern Command’s Human Rights Office in the implementation of a workshop on human rights training and education for the Guatemalan armed forces. Professor Gomez lectured on the importance of human rights training, education and accountability mechanisms and shared the Perry Center’s approach to educating military and police officers together with civilians on the strategic implications of human rights and the rule of law. Among the international experts invited to support the event were five Perry Center human rights alumni from Colombia, Dominican Republic, Mexico and Peru who were able to relay and communicate their own educational experiences.
