On November 5, Perry Center Professor Patrick Paterson, moderated a webinar on “Disaster Risk Resilience: Climate and Security in the Caribbean” with Professor Anthony Clayton from the Institute for Sustainable Development, University of the West Indies – Mona, Jamaica. Dr. Clayton spoke about the impacts of climate change in the Caribbean observing that unstable countries are less resilient which can lead to social unrest or economic collapse. He also presented the idea of road mapping a viable future for the Caribbean and possible solutions to include strengthening resilience by controlling crime and corruption, countering radicalization, preventing terrorism, improving levels of energy efficiency and use of renewables, among others. Dr. Clayton is one of this hemisphere’s leading scientists on climate change and a former member of the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 in recognition of their work on these issues.
