On October 23, 2012, CHDS Professor Evan Ellis spoke to students of the Security Assistance Management SCM-O-1-13 course for the Defense information Systems Acquisition Management school (DISAM) on the topic of “Extra-Regional Actors in Latin America,” at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. The course is conducted by the US government for US defense personnel preparing to deploy to posts in US security cooperation offices outside the United States. For those students specifically preparing to work in Latin American countries, it includes a module designed to orient them to the historical, cultural, political, and security environments of the nations to which they have been assigned. CHDS supports DISAM in this endeavor by making available subject matter experts to provide instruction, with content tailored to individual Latin American countries. In the process, CHDS leverages its close working relationship with Latin American security forces (or government representatives) to go beyond general academic lectures, to orient the DISAM students specifically to issues important to its US partners in the region.
