On September 10, Perry Center Professor Celina Realuyo and former Professor Evan Ellis (now a faculty member at the US Army War College in Carlisle, PA) participated on a panel at the Hudson Institute’s Center for Latin American Studies titled, “Children of Misery: Guns and Gangs in Central America.” The panel was convened to analyze the trends and disparities in security and prosperity among the countries of Central America, specifically with relation to the proliferation of gangs. The event description posed the query, “Such entrenched, wide-spread criminality is not only a human rights issue, but one that directly impacts the United States and all countries facing a surge of migrant children from Central America. What can be done?”

Armando Gonzalez (Chief Editor, La Nación), Ambassador Bosco Matamoros (former Ambassador of Nicaragua to the United States and lecturer at the American University of Managua), and Antonio Jose de la Cruz (Executive Director, Inter-American Trends at the Hudson Institute) also spoke on the panel, and Ambassador Jaime Daremblum (Senior Fellow and Director of the Center for Latin American Studies, Hudson Institute) moderated the discussion.
