On July 21, 2023, Perry Center Professor Celina Realuyo spoke virtually on “The Digitization of Illicit Networks in the Americas and Illicit Financial Flows” at the 9th Congress on the Prevention of Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing, ABCPLAT 2023 in San Jose, Costa Rica. The Costa Rican Banking Association convened 200 professionals from the public, private and civic sectors from Costa Rica and throughout Latin America to discuss the latest threats and countermeasures to combat money laundering and terrorist financing. According to Global Financial Integrity, Latin American countries face a complex and challenging landscape of financial crimes that have made it one of the most violent regions in the world and large amounts of illicit proceeds being laundered.
