On March 2, 2022, Perry Center Professor Celina Realuyo testified on “Countering the Evolving Drug Trade and the Digitalization of Illicit Networks in the Americas” before the Senate Caucus on International Narcotics Control at a hearing titled, “The $150 Billion Drug Market: A Dive into the Economics of Cartels.” She explained how the Mexican cartels have become richer and more powerful, focusing on trafficking dangerous opioids like fentanyl and methamphetamine into the U.S. contributing to the opioid epidemic and how these criminal organizations are capitalizing on cyberspace to market drugs and earn and laundering their proceeds with cryptocurrencies. She testified alongside Michael McDaniel, President, National HIDTA Director’s Association and Director, Houston HIDTA; Lakshmi Kumar, Policy Director, Global Financial Integrity; and Erica Hanichak, Government Affairs Director, Financial Accountability and Corporation Transparency (FACT) Coalition.
