On August 12, 2021, the Perry Center, and the Peruvian Army’s Center for Strategic Studies (CEEEP) joined with the US Army War College’s Strategic Studies Institute (SSI) to discuss China’s growing influence in Latin America and the Caribbean. Keynote speaker, Dr. Evan Ellis addressed China’s strategic objectives in the region to include methods and measures, China’s approach to soft power, relationship building and military sales, and most recently, vaccine diplomacy during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Ellis remarked that China’s economic focus seeks to reorient the post-World War II world in a manner that fulfills China’s objective of being more powerful, secure, and prosperous. Nevertheless, this focus does not lessen the strategic implications and impact on Latin America, the Caribbean, or the United States. Over 1000 participants joined in on the discussion which was recorded and streamed live on Facebook and was available in both English and Spanish. Perry Center professor Dr. Fabiana Perera moderated this event.
