From Wednesday, June 12, to Saturday, June 15, a Perry Center team led by Director Paul J. Angelo participated in the 2024 International Congress of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) in Bogota, Colombia. They gave multiple presentations, participated in the book exhibit, and engaged with local alumni, institutions, and officials on the sideline of the conference. The 2024 theme of the annual conference was “Reaction and Resistance: Imagining Possible Futures in the Americas.” On Wednesday, Director Paul J. Angelo and Professor Celina Realuyo participated in a roundtable with Yadira Gálvez on the bilateral challenges between Mexico and the United States in addressing transnational threats. They also joined Egoitz Gago Anton and Michael J. La Rosa on a panel that explored the concepts of “Colombianization” and “Mexicanization” to better understand and improve public policy responses to Latin America’s insecurity. On Friday, Professor Erin McFee discussed “The Role of Horizontal and Vertical Trust in the Era of ‘Total Peace’ in Colombia,” highlighting key strategies to reduce violence and safeguard human rights. Wrapping up on Saturday, Professor Celina Realuyo spoke on “Leveraging Financial and Digital Intelligence to Combat Transnational Organized Crime in the Americas” at a panel on 21st-Century Security Challenges. Topics included evolving intelligence in terrorism, cyber intelligence, artificial intelligence, financial intelligence, and the need for international cooperation in Latin America. Thank you to all the alumni and friends who attended our presentations and visited us in the exhibit hall. We look forward to seeing everyone at LASA 2025.
