On May 23, 2023, Perry Center Professor Celina Realuyo briefed the 54th Expert Group Meeting for the Control of Money Laundering (GELAVEX) at the Organization of American States on the threat from the digitalization of illicit networks. She spoke of the increased use of the cyber domain in the trafficking of drugs, people, arms and money laundering and terrorist financing and the need to update legal frameworks to regulate the use of cryptocurrencies to safeguard legitimate financial systems in the Americas.
GELAVEX has as its objectives to discuss and propose lines of action to prevent and counteract money laundering in the Americas; and to promote and procure programs, training and technical assistance projects to strengthen regional efforts against money laundering linked to transnational organized crime.
