On June 23, the William J. Perry Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies presented their sub-regional seminar: The Role of Security Forces in Central America in the Age of COVID-19. Dr. Boris Saavedra welcomed guest speakers Mr. Ricardo Gómez-Hecht, Adjunct Professor at the Perry Center, and Ms. Reny Mariane Bake, writer and geopolitical analyst, both Perry Center Alumni, as they discussed how to address the increase in organized crime actors in rural areas in Central America. Throughout the webinar guest speakers stressed the need to re-evaluate the strategy and policy implemented by public security forces to adequately respond to the pandemic and the security implications derived from it.
