On September 26, the William J. Perry Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies kicked off the Washington Security and Defense Seminar (WSDS) for Washington-based civilian diplomatic personnel. During this intensive one-week seminar, participants from the countries of the Western Hemisphere will have the opportunity to learn more about how the US plans and develops Western Hemisphere defense and security policy. The course brings in policymakers from across the interagency who talk about the US policy making process and national objectives in the Americas.

On the first day of the course, the Perry Center’s Founding Director, Colonel (Ret.) Jay Cope, gave an overview of the National Security Policy process, including Congressional oversight. His presentation was warmly received by the participants. Later in the week, Dr. David Spencer, Course Director, and other faculty will participate in a panel discussing current regional political and security challenges. Other presentations will focus on interagency cooperation, the budgetary process, and the current presidential campaign.
